Ballito at a glance
Situated just 40 Km North of Durban, on the magnificent shores of the Dolphin Coast, Ballito is one of the fastest growing towns in South Africa. The coastline is a tourist haven, with an amazing array of wildlife as well as dolphin and whale viewing. Due to the growth, Ballito has now acquired a large permanent resident population and all necessary amenities are close at hand, ie. Schools, supermarkets and shopping facilities.
Short History of Ballito
Ballito was established in 1954 by the Glen Anil Development Corporation, headed up by Dr E. Rubenstein. Directly translated from Italian, Ballito means “little ball”. Apparently the town’s name was taken from a glossy advert for Ballito Hosiery. Original portions of land were advertised for R790, and Ballito was billed in its marketing as “The Caribbean of the North Coast”. Over the years Ballito and the nearby Shaka’s Rock and Salt Rock suburbs have become a popular holiday destination for South African families.
